    Description

    "Next to education, the subject which appealed most strongly to the philanthropic heart of Mr. McDonogh was the liberation of his slaves, and, in general, the colonization of the colored man in Africa. His views are set forth at such length in the following letters that it will be unnecessary to elucidate them further than to speak of his relations to the American Colonization Society, and the results of his efforts as shown in the Liberian Republic."

    "To be dedicated December 29, 1898...The school children of New Orleans have contributed over six thousand dollars for the purpose of erecting in that city a monument to John McDonogh, the voluntary contribution of the children for whom his money built so many school buildings. McDonogh schools were established for colored, as well as white children, and also several schools across the river from New Orleans in McDonoghville, near his old home in Algiers. The monument will be placed in the centre of Lafayette Square. The bust and some other parts of the monument will be made of bronze. Among the strongest sentiments of the philanthropist was his love of music, flowers and children. It is therefore proposed to embody these ideas in the ornamentation connected with the memorial. "His crowning work," as some have called it, "the upbuilding of the public school system of New Orleans through his magnificent bequest," will be appropriately indicated by the figures of a boy and girl at the base of the pedestal bringing flowers to crown their benefactor."
