PARIS: Guillaume de Luyne, 1663. Second edition, as stated at the end of the "Privilege du Roi" prelim pages: "Achevé d'imprimer pour la Seconde fois le 27 Octobre 1663" (Printed for the Second time on 27 October 1663). The first edition was published in 1657.
Vellum covers, 6.5x8.5 inches (16.5x22 cm). Pagination: [16] 343 pages. Text in French.
ILLUSTRATED with a title page vignette, 2 folding engraved plates, 20 full-page engravings in text, a few other small engravings, 6 engraved tables in text, woodcut diagrams, and quite intricate engraved head-pieces, tail-pieces and initial letters.
Previously owned by a Fitz-Patrick who was apparently a Lord, Earl, or Baron of Upper Ossory. His bookplate is on the inside front cover, loosely mounted with a One Penny King George V Postage Revenue stamp. I do not know which FitzPatrick this is, but you can find the long genealogy of the Lords and Earls of Fitzpatrick on the Internet.
Condition: The vellum covers have yellowed and are splitting a bit at the spine folds, the rear cover has spotting, water damage and wrinkling; still these full vellum covers are solid and attractive in a Harry Potter Hogwarts Library way. Internally, the front inner hinge has split but is holding on by several cords, the pages have toned with age but are fully and easily legible, the blank front free endpaper has worming, some small paper repairs, and is coming loose from the binding, the title page and the next few pages have a bit of worming, the title page is trimmed for 3/4 inch at the top (perhaps to remove a previous owner's name) and an old water stain, there is some waterstaining / shorelining to the upper gutter area of some of the pages, the latter pages (especially 325-340 and the endpapers) have water staining / shorelining to their upper area (about 1/3 of the page), the rear blank endpaper has some paper repairs and a few lines written in Latin; otherwise the pages are tight, bright, clear, clean, and fully legible. A presentable copy that is complete including all plates and illustrations. I would consider this over 350 year old book to certainly be in GOOD condition for its age.
Occult truth straight from the 17th century to you.
